Mezzo-soprano Claire Galloway Weber and pianist John Henderson bring an intriguing and sensual program of a song to the War Memorial on Friday, September 25. The program includes works by Hugo Wolf, Anton von Webern, the transfixing "3 Chanson des Bilitis" of Claude Debussy, and Peter Lieberson's modern masterpiece, his "Neruda Songs." Performance in the Memorial Hall with a wine reception to follow.

Meet the Artists

Mezzo-soprano Claire Galloway Weber is an avid linguist and proponent of presenting modern works alongside more standard opera and art song repertoire. Her 2014 – 2015 season includes Daron Hagen’s “Sappho Songs,” Peter Lieberson’s “Neruda Songs,” the U.S. premiere of Fanny Price in Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park, and the world premiere of Barbara Thames in Frances Pollock’s Stinney. She has also been selected as a finalist in the James Toland Vocal Arts Competition in which she will compete this June.
 
This summer she will perform Laura in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta with Bel Cantanti Opera. Past operatic performances include Prince Charmant (Cendrillon), the Mother, Dragonfly, and Squirrel (L’Enfant et les Sortilèges), Olga (Eugene Onegin), Hippolyta (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro), Dritte Dame (Die Zauberflöte), and Dido (Dido and Aeneas).
 
Ms. Weber has also performed as a soloist in oratorio works by Pergolesi, Haydn, Rossini, and Handel with the Peabody Concert Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra, and Concert Artists of Baltimore.  She is passionate about Russian repertoire and has performed art songs and opera excerpts by Tchaikovsky and the Mighty Five.
 
Ms. Weber recently received her Masters of Music at Peabody Conservatory studying with Steven Rainbolt. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Bard College.

EventJohn Henderson is a composer and collaborative pianist based in the Baltimore-Washington area. His compositions have been programed by artists including pianist Ivo Kaltchev and conductor Leo Nestor and featured in venues including the Rolf Piano Series in Pensacola, Florida, the Washington International Piano Series and New Voices at CUA in Washington, D.C., and Peabody on the Court Music Series at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. 
 
He has performed continuo with the ensemble Third Practice, served as music director and conductor for Montgomery College's Summer Dinner Theater, and as a collaborative pianist with mezzo-soprano Claire Weber and baritone Robin McGinness.  
 
John received his BM in composition from The Catholic University of America where he studied composition with Dr. Andrew Simpson, Dr. Steven Gorbos, Dr. Jason Lovelace, and the late Dr. Steven Strunk, piano with Dr. Ivo Kaltchev, organ with Dr. Robert Grogan and Ronald Stolk, and conducting with Dr. Kevin O'Brien. He received his MM in composition from The Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where he studied under Oscar Bettison. He currently serves as director of music and organist at St. Bernadette Church in Silver Spring.
