Daryl Yoder, bass-baritone & Jung-Yoon Lee, piano

For the final throes of winter, Daryl Yoder and Jung-Yoon Lee breathe life into Franz Schubert's melancholic masterpiece on love, betrayal, loss, and the human condition.

Virginia-born bass-baritone Daryl Yoder was raised in southern Africa and received his musical training at the Oberlin Conservatory and Boston University. His 2013-14 season included a return to Opera Lancaster as Balthazar in Amahl & the Night Visitors, Elviro in Handel’s Serse with Bel Cantanti Opera, and Pirro in Verdi’s I Lombardi with the Singers’ Theater of Washington as well as performances of Messiah and Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem. He appeared in recital around the DC area in repertoire ranging from Mussorgsky to Chabrier to Schumann and co-directed a performance of Buxtehude’s rarely heard Membra Jesu nostri at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Baltimore.

At home in both opera and musical theater, Mr. Yoder has also appeared as Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Micha in The Bartered Bride, Betto in Gianni Schicchi, and Daniel Webster in The Mother of Us All in addition to roles in The Marriage of Figaro, The Barber of Seville, La Clemenza di Tito, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado and more. His oratorio appearances include the Requiems of Mozart, Brahms, Fauré and Duruflé, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, and many smaller works with such groups as Apollo’s Fire (The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra), The Columbus Bach Ensemble, the Maryland Choral Society, Boston’s Cantata Singers, the Waltham Philharmonic and the Cincinnati Camerata. He was a fellow at Tanglewood’s Bach Cantata Institute under the late Craig Smith.

Also in demand as an ensemble singer, he has sung with the professional choirs of the Handel & Haydn Society, Emmanuel Music (Boston), Apollo’s Fire and Chantry, and is happy to be returning for his second season with Third Practice. Recordings with Apollo’s Fire, as both a soloist and ensemble member, are on the Koch and Avie labels. He has taught on the music faculties of Kenyon College, Ohio Wesleyan University, and Howard Community College and is currently a voice student of Elizabeth Daniels.

Pianist Jung-Yoon Lee began her musical studies in Seoul, Korea. Her pursuit of
music brought her to the United States to study at such esteemed institutes as the
Cleveland Institute of Music, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Manhattan School of
Music and the Teachers College at Columbia University. Jung-Yoon received the
Dean’s Talent Award and Piano Faculty Prize in Accompanying at Oberlin and
graduated with Pi Kappa Lambda honors. Her teachers include Thomas Hecht, Peter
Takacs and Arkady Aronov. She has participated in festivals such as the Centre
d’Arts Orford, Ernen Musikdorf, and the University of Miami at Salzburg as a soloist
